Well. Here comes my first Hikaru no Go fanfic in... a long while. It doesn't really have a plot and is somewhat disjointed, but it's based around one of my favorite ideas; basically, it implies that while Hikaru interacts with a great number of people all the time, he is only truly close to Sai. Or maybe it's just a writing exercise. By the way, there will be another round of Blind Go in September! I seriously want to sign up, it allows short fics~ ♥

Title: In the Distance
Characters: Mainly Hikaru, with several background pairings.
Warnings: None, I think? It contains slash and het, but both are mild.
Words: 750
Summary: Hikaru Shindou is twenty-five years old.

In the Distance

Hikaru Shindou is twenty-five years old.

Akari sees that he is remarkably well-built, for a professional Go player, most likely because he goes to the gym on a regular basis (this makes Akari smile: back in school, P.E. was his best subject, and for some reason she is glad that he is still interested in such things), when he is not busy with Go, Go-related TV programs and Go-related magazine publications. Akari doesn't know whether it is due to his appearance or his crazy, seemingly limitless Go skills, but Hikaru has quite a number of devoted female fans who treat him almost like an idol singer or a movie star. Well, to be fair, so does Akira Touya, but Akira is married, and Hikaru isn't.

Hikaru, however, doesn't seem to be fully aware of his fanbase's existence; it isn't that he is arrogant, no, he is just generally bad at noticing people and their feelings, as if his vision is constantly clouded. This is probably why Akira always looks alarmed (for the lack of a better word) in his presence, even after all these years. This, Akari thinks, is why her husband is Kimihiro Tsutsui, and not the one she used to be quietly mad about in middle and high school.

One day, right after the graduation, she stopped in front of a drinking fountain, splashed her face with ice-cold water and shook his image violently out of her head.

Shinichiro Isumi and Yang Hai are together, in the most literal sense of the word. To outsiders, they look like an ordinary pair of close friends who share an apartment because it is cheaper that way – not because they are ashamed of their relationship (Yang Hai in particular is very hard to embarrass) but because they value their privacy and are politely discreet about everything. Hikaru knows the truth, and to him, it is completely natural, like the fact that the sky is blue. "I mean," he told Yoshitaka when they touched the subject cautiously for the first time, "most people want to be together when they really like each other, no?"

Yoshitaka still remembers his serene, affable Captain Obvious expression. He chuckles: this is something you can't really argue with. Hikaru is wildly passionate about Go, he understands it better than anyone else, but he is spectacularly simple-minded when it comes to love, or at least that is what it looks like. This might actually be a good thing: it makes Hikaru endlessly open to everything. Sure, Yoshitaka respects Isumi and supports him wholeheartedly, this isn't even an issue, but deep inside, on some instinctive level, he senses the difference between Isumi and Yang Hai's union and his own relationship with his wife, and Hikaru apparently doesn't.

Isumi-san is probably grateful to Hikaru for that.

"Do you still think that kissing is gross, by the way?" Kousuke Ochi asks him smugly. Hikaru rolls his eyes: "No, silly, who told you that?"

Ochi shrugs. "You, back when you were fourteen."

"Oh," Hikaru nods, and the first thing that comes to his mind is one of Sai's long, flowery, eloquent speeches about the ethereal beauty of Heian women. "Well, eh, I was kinda wrong about that."

Yuri Touya, nee Hidaka, finds her husband's relationship with Hikaru Shindou immensely amusing: they never say good-bye to each other because their meetings always end in epic, roof-shaking yelling matches, no matter what they talk about, Go or various things related to Go. "Someday Shindou will tell me the truth," Akira mutters angrily, trying to open a bottle of mineral water with trembling bony hands. "I swear I –"

"You'll pour it all over yourself," Yuri notes calmly, takes the bottle from Akira’s hands and opens it effortlessly. "And stop fretting over Shindou, he is the most sincere guy I've ever seen in my life. Remember how he called you a hopeless neurotic yesterday?"

She knows that Hikaru will never reveal his secret to Akira, whatever it might be, but as long as her spouse is not bored, she doesn't mind it.

Sometimes, when they all gather together, and Kaga starts cracking lame 'manly' jokes after the first glass of beer, and Yongha comes (just to see their old faces, according to him) from Korea, inevitably dragging a very grumpy Suyong along, and Mitani and Kaneko simply continue bickering peacefully in their corner, Hikaru thinks that maybe it is a bit sad that Sai is the only person he really knows how to talk to.
